"Dalawa" Fashion Event Spotlights for New Photographers
The event served as a platform to showcase the talents of local Filipino fashion designers, but more importantly, it was a chance for young and upcoming photographers to build their portfolios.
The Fashion Photographers of the Philippines, Incorporated (FPPI) celebrated its 2nd anniversary with a fashion show called "Dalawa," which means "two" in Tagalog. The event served as a platform to showcase the talents of local Filipino fashion designers, but more importantly, it was a chance for young and upcoming photographers to build their portfolios.
The term "sustainable fashion" was used for the event, but the focus was partially on eco-friendly production which leaves out the ethical and social impact. This highlights the need for a clearer understanding of the concept. Sustainable fashion is a movement that considers the environmental and social impact of fashion throughout its lifecycle, from the materials used to the treatment of garment workers. This includes appropriate recognition and treatment of local artisans, indigenous traditions, heritage, and cultural identity.
The open call for designers resulted in a diverse range of collections, some of which may be better described as "circular fashion" – meaning they prioritize reusing and upcycling materials. This distinction highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of sustainable practices within the fashion industry.
